The best way to maintain the softness and lustre of your silk is to dry clean it after use. Dry cleaning helps dissolve oil and grease from your silk in a more effective way than water.
You can hand wash your silk. Do not use a machine. In a sink or tub fill with cold or warm water with a mild detergent (Woollite is best), do not wring or twist but dry between towels, put on a hanger to completely dry and iron on low setting.
These cleaning instructions were sent by one of my customers. So practical I had to share.
"I had several spots of vinegar and oil salad dressing on my black poppy top, and you had advised to have it dry cleaned. I am not impressed with dry cleaners in our area and have procrastinated (and let the stains sit) for three months. I finally did some research and decided to put cornstarch on the spots to absorb the oil. Figured that couldn't ruin it.
I spread the garment out flat and put white paper under the stained areas. Put about 1/2 tsp. of cornstarch on each spot - not rubbing it in, but pressing on the area a bit. I left it sit for 48 hours and then shook it out. Any cornstarch residue was removed by brushing with a dry face cloth.
Stains are completely gone."
